Managing teams through change
Practical change management for leaders translating organisational intent into everyday work.
Start with the work people need to do
Managing teams through change means connecting the intended outcome with the conditions people need to act. A team can support a new system, structure or priority and still struggle to deliver it alongside existing commitments.
Start with one real change. Identify who will work differently, which decisions remain unresolved and what support is available. Make the next steps clear enough to try, discuss and adjust.
Make the change specific
Walk through an everyday task with the people doing it. What changes in the sequence, responsibilities or hand-offs? What stays the same? Who can resolve uncertainty? Translate broad announcements into examples that matter to each role.
Understand readiness before judging resistance
Ask where people feel ready and where they are constrained. Difficulty can reflect unclear expectations, limited practice time, competing priorities or unresolved dependencies. Ask what is preventing progress before deciding that someone is unwilling to participate.
The Change Readiness Gap frames the difference between organisational confidence and what people can make work. The Change Readiness Compass offers personal reflection; it does not diagnose your whole team or organisation.
Agree what will stop, move or receive support
New work needs room. Make trade-offs explicit with the sponsor: which tasks can stop, which deadlines can move and where additional support is needed? Record the decision, owner and next step so the team does not have to keep negotiating the same issue.
Give people a workable first step
Choose a bounded action that lets people practise the new way of working. Provide a clear point of support and arrange a review. Ask what happened, where the process became difficult and what adjustment would help. Use that feedback to refine the work.
Review adoption through everyday evidence
Look beyond whether a launch occurred or training was attended. Are people using the new process? Are decisions and hand-offs clearer? Where are workarounds persisting? Agree relevant measures with your team and use them alongside direct conversations.
A practical starting point for your leadership team
Bring one current change to a half-day virtual workshop. Together, we identify priority readiness risks and agree leadership actions with owners and next steps.
